12DX Launch Evening at Hughenden Lodge for Craft Beer and Real Ale Appreciation!

Last night saw the first initiation of Bro Neill at a wonderful kick off meeting.
In total, Buckinghamshire Freemasons will present the gift of Freemasonry to over 60 people during the season. Over 40 lodges are participating between now and the 19th of December. 
At last night's meeting, we enjoyed a superbly delivered ceremony in a beautiful lodge room. This was followed by an incredible dining experience which culminated in fine speeches and a dessert of Crème Brulé paired with a Bad Kitty dark porter by  
The star prize in the raffle was some of The Master's Brew, which dates back to 2019! Rare and exquisite beyond belief.

BENJAMIN FRANKLIN

Prominent scientist, inventor, and civic activist, the United States founding father Benjamin Franklin is perhaps one of the most famous Freemasons. Alongside his duties as Grand Master of Pennsylvania, Benjamin Franklin formulated theories of positive and negative electrical charges and invented the lightning rod and bifocal glasses.
Franklin lived to be eighty-five years old. Sixty of those years as a Freemason; he lived and wrote and practiced the principles of the Order.

Franklin was initiated into Masonry in 1731; probably at the February meeting of St. John’s Lodge in Philadelphia. The esteem in which he was held is evidenced by the fact that he was elected Grand Master just a few short years later in 1735.

According to Old Masonic and family traditions, the cornerstone of the Statehouse in Philadelphia
(Independence Hall), built while Franklin was Grand Master, was laid by him and the Brethren of St. John’s Lodge.

Special Interest Lodge Bring A Friend Event

Twice a year we hold a Bring a Friend event, where current Buckinghamshire Masons can bring a friend / colleague / family member to find out more and ask questions.

Our most recent event was held at the Slough Masonic Centre and focused on some of the province's special interest lodges.

Dozens of brethren arrived at the centre to begin the setup as early as 7 am!  

The teams got to work setting up their promotional tables for the afternoons event, but at approximately 9 am work ceased and the brethren Moved upstairs to the temple for an early meeting of the Buckinghamshire classic car Lodge featuring the fantastic project transform in all its splendour.

Upon completion of the ceremony and Lodge closure, the brethren then retired downstairs to finalise any tables that required setting up but also tuck into a hearty hot buffet style lunch and were able to meet and greet the guests who had began arriving at noon. The guests had time to casually walk around each of the Lodge displays and engage in conversation with the brethren,  the Special interest lodges had set up their tables with promotional information, photographs and videos to provide a visual representation of what their lodges had to offer around the edges of the hall.

At 1 pm, everyone assembled in the main dining hall, which was laid out like a theatre, for the presentation to begin. John King, one of the provincial executives opened the day greeting the guests and brethren before handing over to Lee Buckingham & John Palman who look after the communications and membership side of the province.  Matthew Perkins then delivered a detailed explanation of the charity side of Freemasonry, covering International, National and Provincial aspects of what we do.

On completion of the presentation carried out band an open question & answers session the guests were then taken up into the temple for a insight into what happens inside a meeting with a further question and answer session. 

Once this was over they returned back downstairs and continued conversations with the numerous lodges that were on display with the event finally drawing to a close at around 3 pm.

A lot of work went into delivering this day, the reward being a lot of the guests signing up to take their enquiries further.

On June 29, Buckinghamshire Freemasons held their BIG 1-2-3 event at Freemasons' Hall 👏

Over 650 attendees witnessed 75 Initiations, 36 Second Degrees, and 39 Master Masons being Raised in one (very organised) day 🤯

Fourteen months of meticulous planning went into this one day to ensure every detail was perfect. Despite the scale of the event, there was no compromise on quality or impact. Each ritual was performed with the same care, precision, and dedication, ensuring every Candidate experienced the full significance of Freemasonry's timeless traditions 🤝

DID YOU KNOW HE WAS A FREEMASON ?

BRAM STOKER

Abraham "Bram" Stoker (8 November 1847 – 20 April 1912) was an Irish novelist and short story writer, best known for his 1897 Gothic novel Dracula.

Stoker is shown in Grand Lodge records as having joined only one Lodge: the Buckingham and Chandos Lodge, No. 1150, which was formed by Officers and Sergeants of the 1st Middlesex Artillery Volunteers. 

Stoker gave his occupation as author and, although his work Dracula had not yet achieved the renown it would gain in later years, he did write other novels whilst continuing with his daytime job. Initiated in February 1883, he remained a mason for only six years according to records available and appears not to have taken office. 

The Legacy of Dracula:

Despite his close working relationship with his colleague and brother Freemason, Irving, the biographers intimate that Stoker held a secret and latent resentment against Irving which may have contributed to the development of the character Dracula, which was his Magnus Opum.

Undoubtedly Irving was a success story and Stoker may have seen himself very much a side act in the scheme of things.

In this way the possible harboured resentment had conjured an image of Irving as someone who “drained the creative life out of all those around him”, a suitable caricature of a blood feeding creature.

Not only was Irving a friend of Princes and Prime Ministers, he may have had his amours especially as he was estranged from his wife.  In some respects Stoker may have seemed unequal to Irving given his popularity.

As a possible result of this enmity, Stoker has left a remarkable legacy as the creator of Dracula, although there had been other “vampire” creations before him.

The Dracula name may have had its origins in the Gaelic phrase “dhroch fhola”, pronounced “druck ulla” meaning of bad blood. Equally, it may have its stem in the historical name from South Eastern Europe of Vlad Dracul.

Adding the letter “a” to Dracul gives it the meaning “son of”, thus Dracula.

The novel, which is in the public domain, has been adapted for film over 30 times, and its characters have made numerous appearances in virtually all media.

DID YOU KNOW HE WAS A FREEMASON ?

OSCAR WILDE

Brother Wilde was born in Dublin, Ireland on October 18, 1854. A literary prodigy at a young age, Wilde won the highest honour awarded by receiving the Royal School Scholarship at Trinity College. Soon after enrolling in Trinity College, he was admitted to the Magdalen College in Oxford and moved his life and career to England.

At Oxford, Wilde was a popular student admired by his peers. It was one of his most privileged friends at the time, Prince Leopold, the sixth son of Queen Victoria, that would incite his interest in Freemasonry. Brother Leopold was already an active Freemason at the time and encouraged Wilde to join the university’s prestigious lodge, Apollo University Lodge No. 357. The Apollo Lodge holds the same esteem to this day.

Brother Wilde’s interest in Freemasonry was also likely a result of his father, Sir Wiliam Robert Wills Wilde, who had been an active Mason in Ireland.

Wilde was proposed to the Apollo University Lodge on February 16, 1875 and was initiated soon after on February 23.  Being under age Oscar was initiated by special dispensation, this is because the Oxford and Cambridge University Lodges, Apollo University and Isaac Newton respectively, enjoy blanket dispensation to initiate candidates under the age of 21.

In 1876, Wilde joined a second lodge, the Churchill Lodge No. 478 and became a Junior Deacon in 1877. Unfortunately, his Masonic journey ended following his four years in school where he separated himself from Roman Catholicism and active participation in Freemasonry. He was dropped from Apollo University Lodge in 1878 for “non-payment of dues” (NPD) and was similarly removed from the Churchill Lodge in 1883.
While his participation in Freemasonry may have been short lived, much of his life’s work and philosophies share similarities with the values and interests of Freemasons.

Provincial Grand Masters Annual Address 2024

Once again, I welcome you all to our meeting in these magnificent surroundings at Freemasons Hall. I congratulate those who have received appointments and promotions today for all you have done for your lodges and our Province. Through your hard work and that of our Comms and Membership teams, more and more people want to join us.

The theatrical nature of our ceremonies, new sound, and lighting systems creating a theatrical experience now attracts initiates from lodges themselves rather than just via the Province.

In 2014 when I was an APGM, our publicity work started to take off under my watch led by Phil Witney on Marketing and Webster Springer on the shows team. It was Webby’s “Go BIG or go home” attitude which challenged the Province to buy the new show team tents and livery and the Kop Hill event stand was launched.

This was the start of the production of many exceptional film and marketing assets being produced. In the following years Webster was everywhere. He created and led a team that always got up at 6am to bang in the tent pegs including Phil, myself, and Matt Eaton and who were still there 3 days later putting it all away.

We soon learned that pictures of our members enjoying themselves always made others want to join and take part. We really must keep our foot on the pedal on that one.

Promoted to ProvSGW and stepping down today as our Communications Officer is Grae Laws. Grae has taken our Comms team to an exceptionally high level, exceeding all targets set in the strategy. He has automated processes by adding additional, management components which mean that our high level of membership enquires can be sustained by simply executing the process.

He is currently working for UGLE on the launch of the new membership system, soon to be trialed, where he has added exceptional value and which will benefit all members of the craft.

Taking over from Grae today is Lee Buckingham who has some very big boots to fill, and I am sure that he will excel.

We have a solid 2027 strategy and if those stepping into new roles today sustain the same activity, a planned increase of between 35 and 50 per year will be achieved.

By the end of the current strategy in 2027 we shall have increased our membership by 650 when compared to the original downward trend which prevailed in 2017. To continue this success, everyone must play their part by bringing friends and family that might be interested in joining to our Bi-annual “Bring A Friend” events.

The next one is unique and will showcase our specialist lodges, but all are welcome to attend and join any lodge. I am sure you will have spotted our motorcycle lodge members in the procession today. This is a very successful lodge due to creativity and good leadership.

These “Bring A Friend” nights enable you to bring your own friends, sit back, relax, and let others do the hard work for you.

“By 2027 at this rate we shall have prevented the loss of a third of our 2017 membership”.

As a direct result of this hard work, we have been given an additional Assistant Provincial Grand Master and I have appointed Tim Anders, who has delivered Project Transform and run the Provincial meeting for several years, to this role. This will reduce the workload of our existing executive line up and deliver even better results.

You will see the revised APGM lodge groups in the 2025 update of the 2027 strategy in January 2025.

BIG123 was an outstanding success. Again delivered by an exceptional team in a very short time. Who would have believed that we could do over 150 Ceremonies in a single day, but then who thought we could initiate 100 in a single day at BIG100 here in 2021.

The reason these things are unusual is because they are hard work and we are blessed with so many hard working and resourceful people, many of whom are successful businessmen, very busy in their own lives, that can always push the envelope further and deliver.

My part in BiG123 was to Raise nearly 40 new members to the 3rd degree in the Grand Temple. My Deputy Provincial Grand Master passed a similar number to the 2nd degree in the magnificent Egyptian Temple with the sound of classical music playing. Multiple ceremonies really do form a special bond between new made brothers.

Raising all the candidates personally was very moving for me, and a strong bond was struck with these new guys.

My back however had a different story to tell. At 63 years old my bones don’t work as well as they used to! As our past Deputy Provincial Grand Master, Don Varney used to say.

“I am a man of many parts, most of which don’t work properly anymore”!

Although very successful at attracting new members, we must not be complacent. I recently received an invitation from the Provincial Grand Master of Berkshire, my close friend Anthony Howlett-Bolton, who presided over the creation of a Sci-Fi lodge two weeks ago where both the ceremony and dinner that followed raised the bar once again.

“The afternoon ended with two ProvGMs fighting with Star Wars Light Sabre in the lodge”.

Who would have thought it?

Please take notice that we must not rest on our laurels. Berkshire have shown us that there is always more to go for.
Buckinghamshire Province has grown at a faster rate than any other Province since the pandemic and I would like to thank all those Lodges that have taken part and our provincial teams who made this possible.
The Lodge Membership Challenge finishes up the year in December. Will your Lodge be successful?  Fresh thinking works wonders, whether it's a curry night, a race day, a family BBQ, a trip to a WW2 bunker or the simple act of sponsoring a bench to remember a brother who's no longer with us. It all helps secure the future of Lodges, the Province and Freemasonry in general. 
We now have many special interest lodges ourselves. Stephens Lodge has been recovered and repurposed into a walking lodge which holds a very well attended monthly walk on a Sunday. Their “Wee Stroll” event has recently raised over £11000 for charity.

Stephens has become a fast-track lodge for the Light Blues demonstration team, who have been helping me deliver Project Transform demonstrations around the Province.

I have recently joined Nestor Lodge which will be a Fast Track lodge for anyone wishing to excel at ritual. Nestor will be delivering training on Project Transform and assisting other lodges primarily with 3rd Degree Ceremonies with attention to detail, immersing classical music and lighting.

In the new year we will be creating a new football lodge. Please let me know directly if you would like to take part in these new opportunities.

Next week we will launch our very popular 12DX or 12 Days of Christmas event. The organisers, our two incoming wardens, have told me that they intend to smash all previous records and deliver the highest number of initiates for this event so far.

Looking after new and existing members is paramount to the success of Freemasonry. We are going to assist you with this in two ways.
Firstly, the office of Executive Officer or XO was created to support you in doing this, as well as to help you to attract new members and grow your Lodges. We will be asking all lodges who wish to receive candidates from the Province to sign up to a Membership Charter. The quality of incoming initiatives both home grown and from the Province is now very high and need to be engaged, and involved in something that will excite them. If we achieve this level of attention then they will quite simply retain themselves. 
I am therefore asking the XO’s to assist you with the introduction, engagement, and retention of Provincial Candidates. Over the next couple of weeks, your XO will contact you and explain how, together, you can build on our success to date.

Secondly, we are considering a new scheme to look after disabled and older members with the creation of a Buckinghamshire Disability Support Group. This group plans to assist and support those brethren with physical and hidden disabilities, to ensure that they get the most out of the fraternity.  They also propose to offer advice to lodges on how to be inclusive and engage with those members with additional needs.

“This is another example of Buckinghamshire leading the way with inclusivity and engagement.” 

Please remember that working guys cannot attend meetings at 4pm without taking a half day off work. If you have new younger members, please make sure your meetings start at 6pm, with 2 hours for the meeting and 2 hours for the festive board and I encourage you to consider, paying dues monthly to help everyone manage their finances.

It really has been another exceptional year in this amazing Province. Things do seem to get better and better and here’s to another even more exceptional year as we go into 2025.

I thank the Provincial Grand Secretary and his team, the Stewards lodge and all those who have helped today. My personal thanks go out to my own family and my wife Sarah for their unwavering support.

It’s easy to shine as a Provincial Grand Master in this exceptional Province.

Approximately 500 brethren, family and friends will be in attendance to watch and support fellow Brothers receive appointments and promotions within the grand setting of this magnificent art deco building, Home of the United grand Lodge of England.

DID YOU KNOW HE WAS A FREEMASON ?

GEORGE VI 

(Albert Frederick Arthur George, Duke of York) was born on 14 December 1895 in Sandringham, Norfolk, and was King of the United Kingdom from 1936 to 1952.

George VI was initiated in Navy Lodge No. 2612 on 2 December 1919 and was installed as its Master in 1921. An enthusiastic Freemason, he joined several Lodges and different masonic orders. He was the Senior Grand Warden of the United Grand Lodge of England in 1923 and Provincial Grand Master of Middlesex from 1924 until 1937.

He was elected Grand Master Mason of the Grand Lodge of Scotland in 1936 and was appointed a Past Grand Master of England in 1937. Although he formally withdrew from Freemasonry after he was crowned King of England in 1937, he personally installed his brother, George, Duke of Kent, as Grand Master in 1939, the Earl of Harewood in 1943 and the Duke of Devonshire in 1948.

Marcellians Lodge Raise Drifters Band Member Ray Lewis

Ray Lewis former singer of the Drifters, was initiated into Freemasonry at Great Queen Street as part of the big 100 back in 2021,

The evening was not just a raising for Ray but it was also the launch of Project Transform at Thame Masonic Hall, which is also an Oxfordshire Centre,  the last of the Buckinghamshire centres to have this fantastic system installed and rolled out, which both Leaders of Masonry John Clark and Stephen Tucker united in the completion of.

The lights and music that accompany the ceremony make it even more special adding a more dramatic effect to the evening, greatly enhancing the experience for Ray, who was overjoyed by his ceremony.

The evening was incredibly well attended, with executive representation from Oxfordshire wanting to see Project transform in action and delivered as a 3rd degree ceremony.

Ray Lewis was initiated into Freemasonry at Great Queen Street as part of the big 100 back in 2021, what made this evening and ceremony more special was it was conducted at the Thame temple which is in Oxfordshire but used as a temple for several Buckinghamshire lodges. 

One of his fellow band members also volunteered to come along and perform for him. The Drifter was able to sit back and enjoy a brilliant performance from his friend and fellow band member at the festive board. A fantastic end to a wonderful evening.

Passing the Torch at Marcellians Lodge

A bittersweet moment occurred at the most recent Marcellians Lodge meeting when Grae Laws, the Provincial Grand Communications Officer for Buckinghamshire, handed over his apron to Lee Buckingham, his replacement. While Grae showed some reluctance to part with the role he had held for several years, there was also pride in seeing the communications team move forward under new leadership.

The formal transition will take place on Saturday, October 5th at Freemasons' Hall in London. Lee expressed excitement about taking the reins and guiding the team into the future, especially with many new initiates on the horizon.

Meanwhile, Grae isn't stepping away from provincial duties entirely. He'll be moving into the role of Provincial Senior Grand Warden, taking over from Lloyd Harrison, the incumbent Prov SGW. Grae, along with his fellow Warden Mark Harry, will play a key part in the upcoming "12 Days of Christmas" campaign. This ambitious initiative aims to initiate over 60 new members across various lodges between November 20th and December 19th.

As Grae reflected on his time as Communications Officer, it was clear that his efforts had yielded their own rewards in the form of a thriving, engaged Masonic community in Buckinghamshire. The torch may be passing, but the light of fellowship burns as brightly as ever.

BIG 1-2-3 memories - three generations at Fairway 8614

On Saturday June 29th, over 150 people took their next regular step in Freemasonry. 650 people attended this once in a lifetime moment.  It was a fantastic day for many Buckinghamshire Freemasons but even more so for the members of Fairway Lodge No. 8614 as they welcomed a very special initiate.
The lodge had one of the first slots available on the day and got to Temple 14 GQS shortly after 0900 to perform the ceremony of initiation of Oliver, in the presence of his Dad Mike who was the current head of the lodge. Oliver's grandfather, John, who is also a member of the lodge and was present for the ceremony. 
Bro Oliver joins a succession of new members to Fairway lodge who have welcomed seven initiates in the last few years, and will no doubt follow in both his fathers and grandfathers’ footsteps in Freemasonry.
